Kung is a member of the National Academy of Sciences USA and the Vilas Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at UW-Madison, emeritus. He has drawn and painted for more than 40 years and is an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America. He is interested in Western techniques in combination with Chinese-art sensibility. He is also interested in the visual physiology and psychology behind representational art. Subject matters are eclectic, ranging from classical landscape, still life, to whimsical social commentaries. His paintings have been exhibited at several local venues and in private collections. His work has won several awards including the 2012 Ada Biddick Award and 2014 Joseph E. Burk Award of the Wisconsin Regional Art Program’s State Exhibit. One painting was selected and exhibited for the 2013 Museum of Wisconsin Art Member show. Another was also a selected entry of the Northern National Art Competition at the Nicolet Art Gallery in 2013. He has also exhibited his work with the poems by Donna Carnes and Blair Mathews at the Pyle Center at UW-Madison in 2015 and 2016 .
In September 2019, he had a solo show at the J5/1 area of the UW University Hospital, 600 Highland Ave. Madison, WI. Proceeds from sale of the paintings went to the Graduate Education Fund administered through the Genetics Department, UW-Madison.
